Summer in Sussex

7 August 2016

From fine walking across the dramatic South Downs escarpment with far-reaching
Wealden views or through the open and breezy heathland of the Ashdown Forest,
to idyllic villages of tile-hung houses, magnificent country homes and summer gardens,
and vibrant seaside towns, Sussex, whilst remarkably close to London, the M25 and Gatwick
Airport, is packed with interest. Escape for a few days to one of our inns  (below are some
suggestions but you’ll find more on Innplaces.co.uk) and explore the beautiful and unspoilt
counties of East &
West Sussex.  Also, don’t miss the latest addition to our fabulous collection,
The White Horse in Chilgrove, West Sussex.

The Bull Inn, Ditchling, East Sussex

The Bull Inn is the place to relax in following a summer stroll along the South
Downs Way, a world of wide skies and stunning views from Ditchling Beacon.
Sit in the cosy bar, with its sagging beams, bare boards, and big scrubbed tables,
or bag a bench in the secret garden on sunny days. Local is the watchword when
it comes to food and drink – quaff Bedlam ale, and tuck into seasonal goodies,
then retire upstairs to one of the four quirky bedrooms.

Ram Inn, Firle, East Sussex

Firle is a timeless village set down a dead-end lane at the foot of the South Downs.
At its heart stands the 500-year-old Ram Inn, a proper community pub with
rustic-chic rooms, Sussex ales on tap, daily menus brimming with local produce,
a gorgeous walled garden for summer sipping, and a clutch of simple, contemporary
bedrooms upstairs. Perfect for the Opera at Glyndebourne, set in a sublime setting
in magnificent Sussex countryside.

The Horse Guards Inn, Tillington, West Sussex

The 350-year-old Horse Guards Inn is a magnet for locals and foodies alike,
and it’s always bursting at the seams. Inside, it’s a topsy-turvy, quirky sort of
place with original beams, low ceilings, cottage windows and an eclectic,
eye-catching decor. You’ll find hammocks, deck chairs and roaming chickens
in the gorgeous, flower-festooned garden – the place to be having enjoyed a
performance at Petworth’s Music and Art festival (14-30 July).

DAVID’S LATEST FIND….

The White Horse, Chilgrove, West Sussex

Set beneath the South Downs north of Chichester, the wisteria-clad former
coaching inn is the perfect place for foodies and wine lovers to be fed and watered,
as well as being a base for visiting Goodwood and exploring the glorious downland
landscape. Tradition combines with a contemporary rustic-chic feel throughout
the rambling bar and dining rooms and the 15 quirky bedrooms tucked away
behind the inn – two have private patios and hot tubs.
