The White Horse

The personal touch

The North Norfolk coast is knotted together with flinty villages anchored by top-notch inns, and the White Horse is one of the very best: the Nye family’s crisp seaside hostelry in the shellfishing haunt of Brancaster Staithe. It is a classy place decked in nude pine, seaside stripes and boaty nicknacks, all sprinkled with the tang of salty sea air – a wilderness of saltmarshes stretches from the back door to the shore. Local lad Nye revived the run-down 1930s pub two decades ago, partly to give an economic fillip to his fishermen friends, and the menu goes big on mussels and oysters fattened in creeks just yards from the inn. The front bar keeps it real with woodburner and bar billiards, while further back, the sunset-soaked conservatory restaurant serves a very grown-up menu stuffed with impeccably sourced fish and game. There are 15 shipshape bedrooms to tumble into when you’re done.
 

Sticky fingers

The inn’s superior children’s menu includes grilled free-range chicken with seasonal veg and jus (£6.50), local sausage and mash (£6.50), even a ‘superfood salad’ (£4.95). Charmingly, there is also a ‘bowl of the day’ for babies (£2.50) and a kids’ drinks menu: jellyfish cocktail £1.75. Kids are very welcome to stay over, but please don’t leave your under-16 alone in the room. Adding an extra person or child’s bed costs £30; or £5 per night for a hotel cot.
 

Muddy paws

Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the bar, and in annexe bedrooms for a £10 surcharge – a jar of chews is thrown in.
 

Alfresco

The sun deck behind the inn is perfect for sunset-spotting, and commands views that vault all the way to Scolt Head Island and the sea. There is a very dapper landscaped terrace out front too, some of it under cover, with potted marshgrass and heaters for when it gets chilly.
  

What’s on?

The inn throws occasional seafood nights and game suppers in winter, lining up five courses matched with wines and beers, not to mention cooks and fisherfolk talking about their trade.

A curvilinear annexe between the inn and the sea is knapped in brick and flint, topped with grass and sedum, and softened by flower-filled terraces, all blending beautifully with the multicoloured marshes behind. There are eight spacious, sea-breezy modern rooms here, set off with ocean colours and mood lighting. One has disabled access and all are posted with a handy guide to this month’s tide tables, so that you don’t get swept to sea while rambling down to Brancaster Beach. Seven more rooms lie above the inn: numbers 12, 14, 15 and 16 face inland and are cheaper, and the plum one is the ‘Room at the Top’, a split-level space high in the eaves, with French windows, a panoramic balcony and a telescope for gazing out piratically to sea. Winter is an especially evocative time for a stakeout, as thousands of pink-footed geese arc overhead.
  

Creature comforts

The roomy annexe bathrooms feel like a real treat, with smellies by Aromatherapy Associates, and there are tea trays and Nespresso machines as standard. If you get really comfortable, room service is available. Better still, order a picnic, borrow binoculars and a birding guide from reception, and set off along the North Norfolk Coast Path to explore the shining foreshore.

There’s digital TV and wireless broadband in all bedrooms.
 

Pampering

A local therapist is on call for in-room facials, aromatherapy, even ear-candling and ‘Russian honey massage with cupping’. There’s a price list in your room.
 

What’s for breakfast?

Some nifty additions to the standard bacon and eggs here: salmon, haddock or ham from Letzers’ Norfolk smokehouse to enliven your eggs Benedict perhaps; or fresh-baked croissants and boiled eggs with soldiers if you’re a little less peckish. The same menu is offered to all-comers from 9-11am.

Mastering the menu

Depending on the season, local cockles, crab, lobster, oysters, mullet, mackerel and sea trout might all surface on head chef Fran Hartshorne’s dazzling menu. If you’re lucky and the tide is right, you may even spy Brancaster Staithe mussel-men Cyril and Ben Southerland hauling home their catch at the foot of the garden. The meat and game is mostly Norfolk-grown too, but dishes are enlivened by many an exotic twist: the scallops might come with curried chickpeas; there’s Israeli couscous with the slow-cooked porchetta; and if you’re unsure what sea purslane is, they gather it on the marshes behind the inn. Pretty much everything is home-made, right down to the delectable lychee and melon sorbets. Fran’s all-day bar menu is scarcely less interesting. Tempura oysters with sweet chilli sauce come singly or by the half-dozen; there’s a terrific paella with Brancaster Staithe mussels and baby squid; plus Norfolk game-and-ale stew and local-venison koftas. Or else plump for a sandwich of curried crayfish or local salt beef, among other fillings.

At least one roast adds flavour to the menu on Sunday: if you’re really lucky it’ll be Norfolk Red Poll sirloin (£13.95).
 

Foodie Extras

There are one or two tasty weeknight offers to hook in diners. Monday is mussel night, with bumper bowlfuls at £12.95 or mix-and-match platters with four different sauces for £19.95. Thursday is steak night, with rumps and ribeyes from £12.75.

Behind the bar

Two centuries ago Brancaster Staithe was home to England’s biggest maltings, and James Nye revived a long tradition of village alemaking when he developed the range of Brancaster Brewery beers. You’ll find its Best on tap at the White Horse, alongside Woodfordes Lighthouse, Adnams Spindrift and a changing guest. The well-rounded wine list runs to 20 reds and 20 whites, 13 by the glass and six by the handy half-bottle. Reading about them is as entertaining as quaffing them – the Billaud-Simon Chablis has a “sucking-on-stones minerality”, say the tasting notes, while the Cote de Provence Rosé is “just as enjoyable in Brancaster Staithe as in St Tropez”.
 

Bar snacks

‘White Horse boards’ are a pick-and-mix affair: snack on Crayfish-and-dill porridge, mushroom-and-leek pasties or smoked-haddock-and-brown-shrimp crumble for £3.95 each; or combine them into a distinctively Norfolk tapas platter, eaten out on the sun-deck if the weather smiles. If you just fancy a nibble, there is jalapeno pork crackling or sour-cream cashews.

Suitable for both novices and seasoned sailors, Brancaster Staithe’s harbour lies to the south of Scolt Head Island and is the perfect setting for an assortment of water-sports activities.

Seal Trips, Morston Quay NR25 7AA
Common seals breed on this stretch of coast and daily boat trips through the season allow you to see them in their natural environment at Blakeney Point. (Quay starting point is signposted from postcode)

Racing at Fakenham, Fakenham NR21 7NY
This is a popular National Hunt racecourse situated to the south of Holkham and Wells-next-the-Sea. The course was established in 1905 and its racing season is between October and May.

Houghton Hall, Houghton PE31 6UE
This magnificent grand Palladian mansion lies in picturesque parkland near King’s Lynn. It’s the home of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain’s first Prime Minister, and has imposing state rooms, an impressive collection of model soldiers and a restored walled garden.

Pensthorpe Natural Park, Pensthorpe, Fakenham NR21 0LN
If you love nature, wildlife and the great outdoors, then this is just the place to head for. Situated near Fakenham, Pensthorpe is a magical mix of superb nature trails, beautiful gardens and fascinating wildlife. Bisected by the River Wensum, the park covers 700 acres.

Sandringham PE35 6EN
Situated north of King’s Lynn, Sandringham is where members of the Royal Family traditionally spend Christmas. The Grade-II-listed house and gardens, surrounded by a vast estate of 20,000 acres, is open to visitors.

King's Lynn PE30 1HX
Originally called Bishop’s Lynn, King’s Lynn is a classic seaport and market town with a rich and varied history of some 1,000 years. The town’s quaint streets are packed with period buildings and ancient landmarks. Look out for the handsome Custom House.

Blickling Hall, Blickling, Aylsham NR11 6NF
Built during the 17th century, Blickling Hall is one of Britain’s finest Jacobean houses, reputedly the birthplace of Anne Boleyn. One of its greatest features is the magnificent Long Gallery, which includes the National Trust’s most important collection of rare books. There’s also a secret garden and woodland dell.

Down the road from Brancaster, at Heacham, near Hunstanton, you’ll find the home of Norfolk Lavender, where you can see the world-famous lavender gardens, the lavender oil distillery and the national lavender collection and herb garden. The gift shop has a wide range of Norfolk Lavender products and plants.

Titchwell Nature Reserve, Titchwell PE31 8BB
Titchwell Marsh is one of the RSPB’s most visited reserves. Follow several nature trails to spot ducks, waders, geese and seabirds. There are also avocets and terns, bitterns and marsh harriers and a visitor centre, where you can learn more about your surroundings.

As you drive the coast road in these parts, keep your eyes peeled for little stalls outside houses selling freshly-caught fish, shellfish (especially Brancaster mussels and Stewkey Blues cockles from Stiffkey) and crisp salty marsh samphire in the summer months.

Step back in time with local cider and ales straight from the barrel and speciality home-made pies such as wild game, rabbit, beef & Stilton. Close to the salt marshes and the Peddar’s Way so a good stop off for cyclists and nature lovers.

This is a great place to go and find most of the great Norfolk food and drink from around the coast and further afield in the county. Beautifully laid out and a place you could spend a couple of hours buying lovely delicious things, particularly ready meals.

Long-standing and very well-stocked fishmonger’s in Burnham Market selling wet fish, all manner of local seafood, fishy dishes and smoked produce too.

A great fishmonger’s almost opposite The White Horse and a whole lot more such as game, meat, vegetables etc. Home-made products include fantastic smoked salmon, fish pies, patés and fishcakes.

Sister place to The White Horse, a near-perfect family place we agree. Muddy boots, dogs and children are all welcome at The Jolly Sailors. Great pub grub including fantastic home-made pizzas, real ale and 40 different rums on offer behind the bar.

The Albatros, The Quay, Wells-next-the-Sea NR23 1AT
After your fish and chips, go over to The Albatross, an old dutch cargo sailing ship, moored up at the quay, and now a bar and pancake restaurant, for a pint of Woodforde’s Wherry or a delicious dessert.

Deepdale Christmas Market, Burnham Deepdale PE31 8FB
In early December, over 90 stalls gather in the market and the local church in Burnham Deepdale, offering the best of festive gifts and food & drink with entertainment and other Christmassy activities.

At the heart of yachting and twitcher country, The Anchor sits down the road from the famous Michelin-starred Morston Hall and shares much of the passion for local seafood and game. The two youthful landlords were old school chums and they are doing good things in their first pub-restaurant.

Wiveton Hall Café and Fruit Farm, Cley-next-the-Sea NR25 7TE
Outside Wiveton to the north off the A149 coast road is this rather grand hidden Norfolk gem, full of Jacobean architecture, charming walled gardens and productive fruit farming in the grounds. PYO or buy berries and other crops in the shop. But main attraction is the farm café with beautiful views and fabulous rustic ingredient-led cooking.

Part of the nearby Walsingham Farm Shop, this lovely restaurant and next-door fish’n’chip shop is well worth a day trip, combined with a wander around the village, famous for its religious shrines and history.

While in Thornham, this is a great deli with a café on the side, run by Jeanne Whittome (of Hoste Arms fame). Picnic hampers, themed foodie evenings, amazing home wares and boutique fashion too.

Nationally award-winning farm shop and café, with high quality produce, including Soil Association-quality meat counter, organic veggies and a delicatessen and of course excellent home-made meals.

Using the apple crops from their Stanhoe orchards, the Jarvis’s cider press barn is just off the main car park in Wells, producing interesting varietal and bottle-conditioned cider and perry plus single apple juices.

North Norfolk Food Festival, Holkham Park NR23 1AB
A celebration of all that is best about food grown, reared, caught, made or sold in north Norfolk. The best local producers attend, offering plenty of tastings and samples to tempt. First weekend in September.

The Duck Inn, Stanhoe PE31 8QD
Ben Handley cooks inspiring local produce at The Duck Inn, Stanhoe with his wife Sarah running the front of house. An Elgoods pub, stopping for a half is also encouraged. Ducklings menu for little ones too. Delightfully short delicious menu and specials.

Drove Orchards, Thornham PE36 6LS
Amazing fruit farm, home to over 150 varieties of apple, including 100 from East Anglia, and other tasty fruit and vegetables such as nuts, artichokes and salads. The two eating options are a rustic café-restaurant and a new proper fish’n’chip restaurant & take-away, Eric’s, which is run by local chef Eric Snaith of Titchwell Manor).

Arable farmer Teddy Maufe’s real ale shop on his Holkham estate farmstead sells an amazing array of bottle-conditioned Norfolk real ales, many using his finest malting barley

Brilliant fresh fish and chips, cooked to order as they should be. Eat in and watch quay life or take a short walk down the flood bank and eat there, watching the goings-on of a working harbour.

BOOKINGS AND VOUCHERS

Our site is an online platform that allows you to search for and book accommodation. We are acting as disclosed agent for the relevant inns featured on our site. This means that any booking or contractual arrangement you make with any entity featured on our site is made with that entity, and not with us. By entering information into the booking software, you authorise us to pass on all relevant information to those entities with whom you are seeking to make a reservation, and to control and/or process such data in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998. In order to make a booking you are required to provide credit card details. We will enable the relevant inn to gain access to the credit card details via the site in the event of any cancellation and a cancellation charge is due. By making a booking you are expressly authorising access to and use of such data and for the relevant inn to deduct the cancellation charges notified to you in the event of a cancellation.

Bookings will be subject to the terms and conditions of the individual entity with whom you contract, including any cancellation polices they may apply. It is your responsibility to check the terms of such entities before you enter your contract with them. If you wish to cancel a booking, you must cancel using the site unless exceptional circumstances do not permit you to gain access to the site, in which case you should liaise directly with the inn concerned. In either case you may be liable for cancellation charges. Whenever your booking is cancelled whether directly or via the site, it is your responsibility to check your account with HIP to confirm the booking has been cancelled and to be notified of any relevant charges (and to pay them). If you do not attend the inn on the dates booked, this will be treated as a cancellation by the relevant inn on the applicable terms. The accommodation provider’s cancellation policy may continue to apply after your arrival at your inn. In the event that you decide to shorten the duration of your stay, such a request will be dealt with at the discretion of the accommodation provider, and not by us in our capacity as the booking agent. If you amend your booking in this way there may be a cancellation fee levied by the accommodation provider and you should refer to the provider’s cancellation policy for more details. Where the accommodation provider requires a minimum stay for rooms attracting a certain price, this will be clearly stated on our site prior to booking.

We are not responsible for inaccuracies in the booking process; you must check carefully the agreed dates and prices before completing your booking. In particular, you are advised to check the availability of any offers, promotional codes, or the acceptance of gift vouchers before completing the booking, as well as whether any special requirements you may have can be met. Please note that Inn Places Special Gifts may not be available at all the inns where special promotions are being run, and such promotions may have additional terms and conditions applicable.

Although we gather credit card information to secure the booking, the booking will be with the relevant inn to whom, by virtue of you starting the booking process you authorise us to transmit the credit card information.

To confirm a booking, you must be authorised to make the booking by all the persons named on the booking and their parent or guardian for all party members who are under 18 when the booking is made. By making the booking, you are confirming that all persons named on the booking accept the terms and that you will inform the other persons named on the booking of the confirmation details and any other appropriate information. By making the booking you also become responsible for making all payments due under the booking.

The display of accommodation for hire on the site is an invitation to treat only.

By completing and submitting the booking form you are making an offer to book temporary accommodation room nights, which if accepted by accommodation providers, will result in a binding contract made between you and the accommodation provider.

Completing the booking process online does not constitute acceptance of your offer.
