The Kingham Plough

The personal touch

Emily and Miles have been at the Kingham Plough, Kingham for eight years, during which time they have firmly established the pub at the forefront of the Great British food scene. Located overlooking the green in the pretty village of Kingham, the building is constructed of classic Cotswold stone and a complete refurbishment when they took over has retained its character and charm. Emily arrived with a stellar CV, having previously been Sous Chef at Heston Blumenthal’s world-famous Fat Duck and her truly innovative modern British menu has made the pub a destination food-driven inn. The ethos here is all about seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, which includes using local foragers, who may be rewarded for their finds in pints. Outside there is a large paved terrace to the rear set with attractive tables and chairs for eating and drinking al fresco when the weather allows and an enclosed and lawned beer garden with picnic tables. The owners’ desire to be seen as the village hub extends to a machine at the rear of the pub where you can purchase Organic Guernsey Milk by the bottle all day - something that has become as popular with locals as visitors.
 

Sticky fingers

Children have their own menu or half-size portions (high chairs are available), and they are welcome overnight (child Z-bed £25; adult Z-bed £45).
 

Muddy paws

Dogs are allowed in the bar areas and in Chinese and Cow Parsley rooms (£10), which are accessed from outside the Inn, and they even get their own canine bar snacks in the form of pigs ears. If you have packed your boots, a folder containing local walks is available to borrow.
 

Alfresco

When the sun is shining, relax on the terrace or the lawned area. Time a visit for the May farmers’ market attended by many of the suppliers on the menu.

Whichever one you plump for, expect Egyptian cotton on super-king beds, Gingham fabrics, floral feature wallpaper, antique furniture and retro white bathrooms with rain showers over a mix of roll top baths and chrome fixtures in abundance. The bathrooms in the new rooms boast Neal’s Yard Remedies bath products, travertine floors and underfloor heating.

Mastering the menu

Emily’s exceptional background cooking in one of the best restaurants in the world means the food at the pub is as innovative and exciting as modern British pub food gets. Having worked at such a high level before, she knows how to create the ‘wow’ factor with her food, but also remembers that it’s still a village pub that feeds locals as well as gastrotourists. Whilst Scotch quails eggs and snails and mushrooms with garlic butter on toast are signature dishes on the bar menu, the frequently changing restaurant menu keeps things exciting with dishes such as Cornish mackerel burger with beetroot muffin, orange and beetroot chutney; locally shot pheasant Wellington with braised cabbage, parsnips and caramelised apples; and loin and steam pudding of local hogget with purple sprouting broccoli and thyme roasted carrots. The food may be top restaurant quality but the Kingham Plough is refreshingly relaxed and undeniably pubby with its row of wooden stools at the bar, open fires, mix of stone and wood floors and pine settles. The muted colours on the walls and the comfortable sofas by the wood-burner are ideal for lazy afternoons and there’s even a piano near the bar, which local resident Alex James of Blur fame has been known to play on occasion. The carpeted restaurant area has a slightly more grown up feel with antique pine tables and linen napkins.

Behind the bar

As well as locally brewed Hooky ale, and Butcombe bitter from Somerset, the Cotswold Lager is one of the best-sellers behind the bar, perhaps accompanied by a plate of homemade charcuterie. Aspall cider is also on offer alongside several wines by the glass, plucked from a carefully-chosen and discerning European-heavy list covering all bases. The pub’s commitment to local sourcing and using what’s seasonal extends to homemade sloe gin and elderflower cordial using foraged ingredients. If you’re after something even more fortifying, the rum-laced hot chocolate and expertly made espresso coffees should do the trick, as will the award-winning Bloody Mary, perhaps for the morning after.

The 102-mile Cotswold Way National Trail takes in some of the best scenery the region has to offer. There are thousands of miles of footpaths and the area has a reasonable claim to be a walkers’ paradise. The Oxfordshire Way starts in Bourton-on-the-Water in Gloucestershire and takes you to the banks of the River Thames in Henley. The route passes through a variety of contrasting landscapes and settlements including two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty; the rolling Cotswold Hills and the Chilterns.

Not too hilly, not too flat – Oxfordshire's a good place to cycle, with lots of lovely scenery and a variety of routes for all abilities. There are several long distance routes, plus lots of bridleways. The Hanson Way starts in Oxford itself and follows the Thames Path to Abingdon and Didcot.  The Cotswolds are particularly good for off-roading, with a network of tracks, but road cyclists won’t be disappointed either, as there are some spectacular hills and very tricky climbs.

There are plenty of events and festivals throughout the year, from world-famous international festivals to quirky unique events based on local traditions. In winter, the carpets of snowdrops at Painswick Rococo Gardens, Colesbourne and Newark Park draw the visitors. Folk Three (previously Cheltenham Folk Festival) takes place in February, and the Gloucester Cajun & Zydeco Festival is in January. The Festival at Cheltenham kicks off the jump-racing season in March, followed by the Badminton Horse Trials (May) and Cheltenham Jazz Festival (May Bank Holiday weekend). Famously quirky Cotswolds’ events include the famous Cheese Rolling at Cooper's Hill and Tetbury Woolsack Races (both late May). Wychwood Music Festival in May is popular with families. Giffords Circus travels around the region in the summer, offering an old-fashioned ‘village green’ circus experience. The Times Cheltenham Science Festival is in June, along with the Royal Three Counties Show. Tewkesbury Medieval Festival takes place in July and so does the Royal International Air Tattoo at Fairford. In the autumn, check out the changing colours of the leaves at Westonbirt.

If you’ve ever fancied trekking with huskies but not fancied travelling to Alaska, this is the place for you. An exhilarating and memorable animal experience, you don’t just sit there and look at the scenery, you get fully involved with the pack, learn all about these incredible dogs, and enjoy plenty of hands-on time with the team. You’ll be trained to take charge of the racing rig with huskies as your lead; they have fast and steady dogs to suit all levels of riders, and you can even sleep in a Sami tipi if you want to.

Weaving through the 440-acre Heythrop Estate, this 18-hole features ancient woodland, lakes and streams – it’s a quintessentially English setting. Visitors are welcome and there are all kinds of other facilities, including a spa.

Places to Visit

The Model Village, Bourton-on-the-Water GL54 2AF
A model of Bourton-on-the-Water itself, on a one-ninth scale, giving a unique giant’s view of its buildings, streams, parks, museums and so on. It was built in the 1930s and is Grade II-listed, as are many of the full-size versions of the buildings.

Birdland, Bourton-on-the-Water GL54 2BN
Get up close to birds from all over the world, including penguins, parrots, owls, flamingos, birds of prey, hornbills and more, plus riverside walks, a nature reserve and over 50 themed habitats.

Chastleton House, Chastleton, Moreton-in-Marsh GL56 0SU
This Jacobean country house, built between 1607 and 1612 by a prosperous wool merchant, is a rare and fascinating gem of a place. Although it was built as an impressive statement of wealth and power, the family that owned it until 1991 became increasingly impoverished, with the result that the house remained essentially unchanged for nearly 400 years, while the interiors and contents gradually succumbed to the ravages of time. With virtually no intrusion from the 21st century, the atmosphere is informal and timeless and the setting gloriously unspoilt.

Devil’s Quoits, Stanton Harcourt
Prehistoric site This circle has been fully restored, after being partially dismantled during the construction of an airfield in 1940. The site is between 4,000 and 5,000 years old and consists of a henge, or ditched embankment, and a large number of standing stones. Further damaged by gravel extraction, the landscape has been reconstructed. There is currently a large landfill site adjacent to the circle although this will eventually cease to be active. It’s rather a strange place, but does perhaps give an idea of what a newly-built circle might have been like, and the size of the circle and number of stones give it quite a dramatic atmosphere.

Broughton Castle, Banbury OX15 5EB
A delightful moated and fortified manor house, built from the local Hornton ironstone, Broughton was one of only twenty houses to get five stars in England’s Thousand Best Houses. If you watched BBC2’s adaptation of Wolf Hall, you might recognise it as one of the locations. The core of the house dates to 1306, but most of what you see today dates from the 1550s. The Castle has remained in the same family since 1447, and it is home to the 21st Lord and Lady Saye and Sele.

Hidcote Manor Gardens, Hidcote Bartrim GL55 6LR
A gorgeous Arts and Crafts garden, with colourful and intricately designed outdoor ‘rooms’ that are full of surprises, Hidcote has a maze of narrow paved pathways leading to secret gardens and magnificent vistas. If you need some inspiration for your own garden, it’s the perfect place. The Monarch’s Way path runs close by, leading to the chocolate-box hamlet of Hidcote Bartrim, where you’ll find traditionally thatched stone cottages that were once home to Hidcote’s gardeners and are now available to rent.

Cotswold Motoring Museum, Bourton-on-the-Water GL54 2BY
The motoring history of the 20th century is encapsulated in this collection of vintage cars, classic cars and motorcycles, caravans, original enamel signs and a fascinating collection of motoring curiosities.

Rollright Stones, Chipping Norton OX7 5QB
Prehistoric site An unusual circle of 77 heavily weathered, closely-set slabs of local Neolithic limestone, known as the King’s Men, traditionally a monarch and his courtiers petrified by a witch. The Rollright Stones also include the Whispering Knights burial chamber, and single King Stone, which is on the other side of the road. They span nearly 2,000 years of Neolithic and Bronze Age development.

Bourton-on-the-Water GL54
Known as ‘the Venice of the Cotswolds’, Bourton is one of the most visited villages in the region, so it can be quite busy, but it really is lovely. The River Windrush runs through the village, with copious low bridges criss-crossing the water, and the place is full of impressive buildings.

Blenheim Palace, Woodstock OX20 1PP
A masterpiece of baroque architecture, Blenheim Palace is a stunning and awe-inspiring place, one of the grandest houses in Britain. Built to commemorate the victory of the 1st Duke of Marlborough at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704, the architecture is enormously ambitious, and the house is full of paintings, tapestries and furniture. Birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and home to the 12th Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, there’s plenty to see, and the gardens and park are as dramatic and impressive as the house itself.

Chedworth Roman Villa, Yanworth GL54 3LJ
During its heyday in the 4th century, Chedworth Roman Villa was home to some of the richest people in the country. It’s one of the largest Romano-British villas in the country, with fabulous mosaics, some only excavated very recently. The museum explains the discovery of the site by the Victorian gamekeeper who unearthed the first clues to what lay beneath an apparently ordinary field.

Cotswold Farm Park, Guiting Power GL54 5UG
Established in 1971 by the father of BBC Countryfile presenter Adam Henson, this popular farm park is home to over 50 rare breeds, many of which you can see if you take the “safari" tour of the farm. Children can feed the chickens and pigs while grown-ups can listen to some of the talks about animal husbandry and general conservation.

Burford is surely one of England's prettiest small medieval towns with some really beautiful buildings (the church is considered one of the best in the country) and is a busy and thriving community of about 1,000 people. The town merchants were granted a charter to hold their own markets over 900 years ago, and it’s still a great place for shopping, with loads of independent shops and galleries.

BOOKINGS AND VOUCHERS

Our site is an online platform that allows you to search for and book accommodation. We are acting as disclosed agent for the relevant inns featured on our site.
