The Queens Arms
Mastering the menu
They’ve recently changed the size of their menu to A3 so they can fit a map of all the local producers and suppliers on the back! This commitment to provenance and regionalism is reflected in their ‘food in metres, not miles’ motto, which is helped by the fact they have their own farm where free-range chickens roam and rare-breed pigs (Gloucester Old Spot and Saddleback Cross) share a paddock. There’s a herd of Dexter and Galloway cattle too, which will be featuring on the menu sometime in the future. The chef, Ben Abercrombie, likes to keep up with what’s happening in the culinary world with regular trips up to London, and it shows in his creative menu that combines rustic and contemporary ideas. There are classic options such as ploughman’s and a burger, but they’re far from run-of-the-mill – the char-grilled rib burger comes with smoked chicken thigh and buttermilk drumstick. Some fun is had with the menu descriptions (mutton dressed as lamb, chicken lunchbox). Settle into the smart dining room with its French doors onto the garden and tuck into a terrine made with ham hock, cheek and leeks (served with black pudding and chestnuts) and move onto honey-glazed Creedy Carver duck breast with pak choi, charred liver and compressed pear. Desserts are an imaginative and well-made bunch, too, perhaps clementine and passion fruit cheesecake with blood orange sorbet. Cheeses hail from the West Country and bread and cakes are made in-house.

Every Saturday during the summer there’s usually a BBQ in the garden, and you’ve really struck lucky if your visit coincides with a bank holiday, for that’s when there’s a hog roast sizzling out back (the pigs reared on their own farm).

Behind the bar
When it comes to beer, the Queens Arms doesn’t hold back with a cracking range at the pumps and over 50 bottled varieties meaning there really is something for everyone. They’re quite happy for you to have a taste of what’s on draught if you can’t decide, while the third of a pint glass option is great for drivers who can try three different ales and still only consume a single pint. There is Cheddar Ales’ Potholer, Pitchfork Bitter from the RCH Brewery and Exmoor Ale (from Somerset’s oldest brewery), plus guests from near and far. There might be Thornbridge’s Jaipur, something from the Gyle 59 Brewery in Thorncombe, Brewdog, Brooklyn Lager and Leifmans chocolate and raspberry beer served over ice. Expect two or more local scrumpies on the go, plus Orchard Pig (from just ten minutes away) and Thatchers Gold. Choosing doesn’t get any easier when it comes to the harder stuff, not with 57 different whiskies, 16 gins and eight vodkas to go for. There are cocktails, too, including Sipsmith Summer Cup in the warmer months, and they make their own sloe gin and vanilla vodka. Wine isn’t neglected, with a good range by the glass and suggestions for matching food and drink.
