The Stapleton Arms
Mastering the menu
When it comes to food, there’s a genuine sense of enthusiasm for regional produce, with a menu that combines respect for the traditions of pub dining, but updated to create feel-good dishes that satisfy in the 21st century. So the homemade burger is made from local beef and arrives with triple-cooked chips, toad-in-the-hole is hearty stuff, and the game pie is a good ‘un. A starter of potted hare with pickled cucumber and beef-dripping toast shows the serious intent of this kitchen. The seasonal and local boxes are ticked in most departments: salads are grown just down the road, eggs come from chickens who reside in the village, and a local chap dives for scallops. And if you want to see where they get the lamb from, take a look out of the window and you’ll see sheep out in the fields. There are sandwiches, ploughman’s and lighter dishes up for grabs at lunchtimes. Sit wherever you like – bar, dining room or garden – and get a taste of the place.

Foodie extras
The garden affords plenty of opportunity for eating alfresco, and you’re in luck if you arrive on the right alternate Saturday during the summer to find a roast cooking outdoors in the garden. They’ll make you a picnic if you’re heading out for the day. Breakfast, packed full of local produce, is available to non-residents.

Behind the bar
Drink something from the Bristol-based Butcombe Brewery, which you’ll find at the pumps alongside a regularly changing slate of Dorset ales. This being the West Country, there’s cider, too, with local Orchard Pig on draught, plus Ashton Press, Cheddar Valley and something from a couple of small-scale Somerset producers. Locally made cider brandy (from the good folk at Burrow Hill) makes an appearance too; try it in a cocktail mixed with fizz. There’s some local firewater as well, in the shape of Black Cow’s Pure Milk Vodka, which is made from the milk of grass-grazed cows!
