The Fuzzy Duck
Mastering the menu
The bar and restaurant are separated by a double-aspect fire, and, wherever you sit, there are stylish touches and a good atmosphere. The hard-working kitchen team, led by Joe Adams, makes just about everything on the premises (bread included), and they’ve given their handiwork the moniker of ‘contemporary Cotswold’. That’s a fair term as it happens, with lots of local produce on show and a decidedly British flavour to the dishes. The chefs turn out trendy versions of classic bar snacks such as black pudding sausage roll, or the Cotswold duck egg Scotch egg with piccalilli, plus a sharing platter where they all arrive together to form a mini feast. The main menu focuses on winning flavour combinations to create dishes with both modernity and comforting familiarity. Twice-baked Cotswold Blue soufflé with caramelised walnuts might kick things off, followed by something under the ‘Classics’ heading (free-range sausages and mash), and the market fish of the day might be pan-fried John Dory with scallop, Parma ham, Jerusalem artichoke purée and salt-baked artichoke gnocchi, dressed with the pan juices. The grill provides prime protein (from Aubrey Allen) in the form of a classy burger, ribeye steak, or a whopping côte de boeuf for two to share. Finish with a duck egg custard tart with nutmeg ice cream. There are sandwiches at lunchtime and an excellent value midweek fixed-price menu option. Sunday lunch is a traditional affair with roasts taking centre stage, but a supporting cast of alternatives. Private functions are catered for in the revamped Garage, which is a charming room opening onto the terrace, with bespoke menus.

Visit in the summer and you might find a BBQ fired up in the garden. If you’ve got walking in mind, they can provide a map, umbrella and a pair of Hunter wellies, and will happily knock-up a picnic if you fancy one for your adventure. If you’re staying in, the homemade chocolates for sale in the pub might well catch your eye.

Behind the bar
Purity Brewing’s Mad Goose (a citrusy pale ale) is joined at the pumps by regularly changing guests, but it’s far from all about the beer at the Fuzzy Duck – check out the list of reasonably priced cocktails. They have their own bloody Mary alongside other classics such as mojito and cosmopolitan, or how about an espresso martini? The wine list has great options by the glass in measures to suit most requirements, and when it comes to glasses of fizz, it’s a choice between a light and refreshing Prosecco (including a rosé version) and a more indulgent Bollinger. There’s a global spread on the list, too, with all the currently fashionable grape varieties present and correct.
